DROVER by Verterra facilitates the generation of Reef Credits by enhancing grazing productivity and reducing fine sediment runoff to improve water quality. It offers a comprehensive toolkit for project design, advanced modelling, and robust monitoring and verification support. By prioritising strategies that boost grazing productivity, DROVER not only increases farm output but also incentivises effective land management practices through the Reef Credit Scheme, delivering both economic and environmental benefits. Additionally, it integrates with soil carbon farming, enabling stakeholders to leverage synergies between various ecosystem service markets, i.e., Carbon Plus. DROVER can include training and consultancy services to ensure the successful implementation of Nature-Based projects and adherence to best practices.

Why DROVER:  Sediment flowing to the Great Barrier Reef affects the health of coral and seagrass habitats, reducing the ability of reefs to withstand or recover from events like coral bleaching (2017 Scientific Consensus Statement). The Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan includes sediment reduction targets for specific catchments. We understand land stewardship includes maintaining soil health for improved pasture and environmental outcomes, DROVER is here to help.

1. Sediment Reduction Calculation

Our mapping service stands out in the market by offering detailed monthly reports on your Reef Credit project, including the calculated sediment savings to date. This comprehensive information allows you to make timely adjustments to your management practices, or track the success of decisions made, providing a deeper understanding and control over sediment levels and soil health. Ultimately, this proactive approach aims to enhance water quality and foster healthier ecosystems. Refer to Figure 1.

2. Monthly Ground Cover Mapping

DROVER identifies areas where ground cover is below regional averages. By analyzing this data, graziers can make informed decisions on their management practices. Our service also includes a historical perspective, using satellite imagery to reveal trends over the past seven + years. Refer to Figure 2.

Figure 2: Example Minimum ground cover map. This map was produced from monthly ground cover satellite data (January 2017 to December 2023) to reveal areas with high and low ground cover percentages. Areas colored green represent regions with consistently good ground cover, while those in red indicate low ground cover or bare areas.

3. Grazing Management Auditing

DROVER provides monthly updates to monitor changes in grazing practices. This helps identify utilisation of paddocks, informing necessary adjustments in grazing management if required. Additionally, DROVER supports auditing to ensure management plans, such as those focused on Reef Credits or Soil Carbon are implemented as stated. Refer to Figure 3.

4. Measuring effective rainfall

Effective rainfall refers to the portion of precipitation that contributes to soil moisture, considering factors such as infiltration, evaporation, runoff and interception by vegetation. By quantifying land condition into a commonly understood measure such as effective rainfall it allows a quick understanding of the production potential of paddocks and a comparison to what could be achieved under best practice management.

5. Tailored Mapping Solutions

DROVER offers tailored mapping solutions designed to meet the unique needs of each landholder, or client. Whether you require detailed analysis of ground cover, tracking of historical trends, or insights into grazing practices, our services can be customized to provide the most relevant and actionable information. Reach out to us today to discover how our specialised mapping solutions can support and optimise your land management practices. Refer to Figure 4.
